The Statue of Liberty was scalped by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi who first envisioned his masterpiece as a light house near the entrance to the Suez Canal. The Egyptian government was having economic problems though and didn't accept Bartholdi's proposal. Bartholdi then sold a modified version of the statue to the French government, who in their sole act of kindness, gave it to the United States as a gift.
