Microsoft has a recognition called a Technology Fellow where they acknowledge those individuals whose technical and leadership skills compare with a corporate vice president. That is, a Technology Fellow is someone who is just as valuable to the company (if not more) as the company's top business leaders.
I first heard about the Fellow program because I have implemented Team Foundation Server (TFS) for my team and thus read Brian Harry's blog. Brian is one of the twenty Microsoft Fellows. I've always wondered how Brian - whose title is Product Unit Manager - can know so much about the technical side and business side of TFS. Turns out the guy is pretty darn smart, which explains a lot.
If you're interested in some other Technology Fellows, check out their website. You'll find some pretty smart technical leaders out there.
