Your best day(s) of your life

While looking over my son's baby book tonight I asked my wife, what day was better: our wedding day, or birth of our first child?

Our wedding day turned out fantastic. She didn't leave me at the alter and I got to marry a wonderful woman. And, if you're keeping score at home, I did get to party with my friends and family all night, which was pretty cool. The weather was 75 degrees and sunny. The church was at the University of St. Thomas. My brother's had the after wedding beer ice cold. All perfect in my mind.

My son's birthday was a bit different. It started at 5AM in the morning when my wife went into labor. 19 hours and what they called a major surgery (i.e. c-section) later, we had our first born. A wonderful, healthy, cone-headed baby boy.

So which day was better? To be honest, I don't think you can compare them. Our wedding day was a celebration of two families and two people coming together. The birth of our son was what I would call, "the most amazing event anyone can ever witness." They are equal in my mind as the two best days of my life.

I think my daughter's birth was definitely more memorable. They broke my wife's water for her, which ended up looking like someone had turned on a garden hose full of mineral oil. And when she had her c-section in the early a.m., they put up the "sheet" so she couldn't see her own stomach cut open, and when they cut, it sprayed blood all across the sheet in a dark shadow, like out of a slasher movie. We both laughed. I got to see the c-section, which looked like two big steaks, and wander over for the cord cutting. Later one of my friends I hadn't seen in a while showed up with fast food for lunch, which may have been a better present than any six pack I've ever received - it seemed incredibly considerate.

And the end result was my daughter, who cheers me up all the time. Not that my wife doesn't cheer me up, but my daughter is a natural.

Our wedding (near Christmas) was memorable for the sheer volume of people that showed up and the big Christmas tree in the oldest Methodist church in the state (now gone), but I remember the honeymoon better because it involved a fire alarm where we ended up at a dead end in the stairwell and a rather amusing time in Vegas because that's what we could afford 14 years ago.

The more I think about it, I think you're right. My son's birth is more memorable. It's the most interesting thing I've ever been through. I can't wait for it to happen again, and maybe again one more time if I can talk my wife into it.
