2009 Baseball Payrolls

'09 payroll numbers are out and they are fantastic to look at. Of course the underdog Yankees came out on top at $220 million. If that doesn't mean much to you, the next highest was the other New York team, the Mets, who paid $142 million. And if that doesn't mean much to you, the Yankees paid more for their team this year than Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Washington, Florida, combined.

The Mets by the way, have the most embarrassing payroll number. $142 million couldn't even get them to a .500 winning percentage (they had 72 losses / 90 wins) nonetheless into the playoffs.

Our Twins fared well. At $73 million they were ranked in the bottom 10 teams and, along with the Rockies, were the only teams with payrolls under $100 million to make the playoffs.
